Hip Hop HeavyWeights Brew Backlash On Kanye West

There are some major backlash brewing amongst hip hop heads who believe that Kanye West is "Feminizing" the hip hop culture by explicitly promoting the concept of wearing women clothing to teenage rap fans.

According to Shot97.com and Brand Nubian's Lord Jamar" Kanye West’s Skirts is Not Hip Hop! After raising eyebrows by unleashing a direct shot at men’s current fashion and targeting Kanye West as a trendsetter over Instagram, Brand Nubian's Lord Jamar has hit up SOHH to explain his comment.Rather than apologize or remove his post, Jamar said he fully stood behind pointing the finger at Mr. West for inspiring questionable men’s fashion. “First of all, it’s not just jabs at Kanye West,” Jamar explained to SOHH. “It’s anybody promoting the feminization — of the Black man in hip-hop culture. Anybody that I see out there, rocking dresses and all of that type of sh*t, I might shoot a jab at. But Kanye is one of the ones right now that’s representing that movement.
He’s one of the first ones that you see in a skirt. Now you got other people following suit and rocking full-out dresses or they’re trying to rock kilts. We’re not Irish. We’re not Europeans. Rocking kilts and all that is just another excuse to introduce that skirt style. You understand what I’m saying? And I’m not with it. This has nothing to do with sexuality, who they choose to be with and all that, I’m not even talking about that"......The quote suggest that because most Kanye fans are from urban backgrounds, who make up a higher percentage of people who support his music feel as if Kanye West is trying to sell them his sexuality by presenting himself as a boy in a dress. On the other hand the remaining percentage of Kanye fans who are not from urban backgrounds, it seems as if Kanye is selling them a different image by joining forces with one of the most over- rated females of our time Kim Kardashian. By doing so Kanye creates an image that makes him seem that he is not only a heterosexual man, but also a new member of the Caucasian society.
Kanye's career is nothing but a business, as though it should be. But is this considered to be "selling your soul to the devil"? Most of us would agree that when the quality of music is good, then it should speak for itself, without the additional scandals and or controversy.  Kanye made a song called "GoldDigger" where he himself stated that "I ain't saying she a gold digger, but she ain't messing with no broke nigger". Seems contradicting right? Well how about when his mother Dondra West past away, she was killed because she refused to listen to her Doctor, after being warned not to go under surgery for any kind of enhancement, which was the reason for her death. Basically Kanye West is a fraud who sold the Hip-Hop community a story of a poor black kid on the come up, and once he got his foot in the door he is now showing us that he is nothing but a puppet who will do anything for fame and fortune, and even after successfully doing so it became addictive to the point of no return.

  1. I would say that Kanye isn't "feminizing" hip-hop so much as DEfeminizing the kilt. Which shouldn't even be necessary because the kilt is MENSwear.

(Of course, we could have the "was it a kilt or a skirt?" argument... Traditionally, a Scotsman's kilt is made of wool (not leather), woven in a plaid pattern and worn by a Scotsman. OTOH, Ye's piece was built exactly like a kilt - it was a wrap (not a tube) with a flat overlapping front and pleats on the back and sides. My opinion: it's not a TRADITIONAL kilt, but it is a kilt... and every kilt IS a type of skirt that men can wear... because MEN can wear whatever the hell we want to!)

Some have said that Kanye can't wear a kilt because he isn't from Scotland. So, should we go to the kilt store and hang a "Whites Only" sign over the door? Hmmm? If Kanye's racial heritage is the objection here, does that mean the scandal goes away if he wears a SARONG, like half the men in Somalia do?

I know that the black community has decided that clothing is terribly important to establishing credibility, prestige and identity - from gang colors, to outrageously priced shoes, to saggy pants, to "bling" - there is so much of "respect me because I'm wearing this clothing" in the community. And, that's the real issue here - Kanye's critics say "Kanye's skirt has no place in hip-hop", which is really an accusation that he has betrayed the community by defying its dress code. But, if I put on Kanye's OLD clothes, do I become Kanye and earn a place in hip-hop?? Does clothing really change a person AT ALL? Why does anyone care what someone else wears?

    1. From the ouside looking in I feel as if Kanye should try to be a better role model in a way that he should try to teach his followers within the Hip-Hop community how to dress so that they can brand themselves in a more respectable way...The whole kilt thing is going into a different direction, in which he should be cautious because not to many Hip-Hoppers understand the meaning behind it.
